about our town

At the Crossroads of Southern Michigan

Rolling Hills, Friendly Communities, and a Rich Heritage

Somerset Township is a zoned community in southern Michigan, bordered by Jackson and Lenawee Counties and located on the eastern edge of Hillsdale County. It sits at the crossroads of US-12 and US-127, making commutes to Hillsdale, Coldwater, Jackson, and Adrian convenient. Within an hour, travelers can reach Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Lansing, Detroit, and Toledo, Ohio by main highways.

This 36-square-mile township offers smaller, relaxed neighborhoods, rolling hills, farmland, and many public and private lakes. The area also includes Department of Natural Resources sites, plus a commercial corridor that spans the northern portion of the township along US-12.

Directly east is the Irish Hills area, with tourist attractions such as Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, just 11 miles away. Bundy Hill, once the highest point above sea level in Lower Michigan, is located here. Its natural springs feed the Grand River, flowing west into Lake Michigan, while the River Raisin watershed runs in the opposite direction toward Lake Erie.

Somerset Township has a rich heritage as part of the “Sauk Trail,” a historic Native American route used for travel and commerce. Plan a visit soon to experience what Somerset Township has to offer.
